Indian astrology
Indian astrology is also popularly known as Vedic astrology. Indian astrology has been in existence since ancient times and can be traced back nearly a thousand years. As its name, Vedic astrology (or Indian astrology) has its roots in the ancient Indian scriptures called Vedas. Early Indian astrology referred to only the planets and stars to predict events while later on it included the zodiac signs also. In Indian astrology horoscopes play a very important role. A horoscope is a diagrammatic representation of the celestial bodies at the time of a person’s birth. This includes 27 constellations which are comprised of the 12 zodiac signs, 9 planets and 12 houses. Depending on the time of birth the signs and planets are placed in the various houses. What Indian astrology does is basically interpret the positions of these components in reference to humans and related experiences. As old as Indian astrology is, there are many different types that exist. The three main categories are Siddhanta (astronomy), Samhita (Mundane astrology) which is concerned with predicting events like natural calamities, wars, financial situations, house construction etc, and Hora (predictive astrology). Hora has several branches within it which deal with specific types of astrology. Some of these branches include making predictions on an individual horoscope (Jaatak Shaastra/Natal astrology), predictions on the basis of sounds or names (Swar Shaastra/Phonetic astrology), a branch dealing specifically with females (Stree Jaatak/Female astrology), astrology based on numbers (Ank Jyotish/Numerology) etc. While the use of horoscopes is common in both Indian astrology and Western astrology, there is one primary difference between the two. This difference is in the way the zodiac is measured. Indian astrology makes use of sidereal zodiac in which the movement of the planets is seen in relation to the fixed position of the stars. In Western astrology on the other hand considers the planets in relation to the position of the sun and spring equinox. Indian astrology, like other types of astrology is more complex than is apparent. Indian mythology has lots of stories referring to the zodiac, the constellations and planets. It is popularly thought that this was one way of explaining the complex terms and methodology of Indian astrology to the common public in a way that they could relate to and remember. However, even today the intricacies of this science are not clearly understood. In an attempt to gain a better understanding of astrology, be it Indian astrology or otherwise, one can relate it to statistics and probability. If the probability of certain combinations in horoscopes leading to the happening of certain events turns out to be 70-80%, then we can make a statistical connection between the combination being present and the event occurring.
