The Rev. Pat Rush, pastor, Visitation Catholic Church, Kansas City, Mo.: Now and then I glance at my horoscope in the newspaper. For me it’s merely amusement and entertainment. Astrology symbols
Astrology is a popular field of study and is considered by many to be a science and by many others to be more metaphysical in nature. It is basically the interpretation of the position of the celestial bodies like the sun, moon, stars and planets in relation to the events and experiences of individuals. In the field of astrology, an important tool is the horoscope which is a diagrammatic representation of the celestial bodies for specific persons. In constructing or drawing up a horoscope, an astrologer makes use of specific astrology symbols. These astrology symbols can be thought of as one type of cosmic shorthand where each symbol has some meaning. Those who know what the different astrology symbols mean are able to interpret them and get an understanding of a person’s character, behaviour and even relationships. In Western astrology, the astrology symbols used are mainly for the celestial bodies and for the zodiac. The astrology symbols used for representing planets are generally made of four different elements, namely, a circle (spirit), a crescent (mind), a cross (physical matter) and an arrow (direction). Astrology symbols for various important celestial bodies can be described as follows: Sun - Circle with a dot inside representing the divine spirit around the seed of potential. Moon - a crescent that stands for the human mind. Earth - A circle with a cross inside it which indicates the four main directions. Mercury - A circle with a crescent on the top and a cross on the bottom making a whole, which stands for mind balanced over spirit and matter. Venus - a circle over a cross representing the divine spirit over matter (it is also a symbol for female). Mars - a circle with an arrow on top of it which represents the divine force over the divine spirit. The remaining planets used in astrology have more complicated symbols using a complex combination of the four basic elements. Jupiter - This has a crescent rising over a cross which stands for the mind rising over matter. Saturn - the symbol has a cross slightly above a stylised crescent which represents matter being over the human mind. Neptune - it has a cross intersecting a crescent (like a trident) which represents a meeting of mind and matter. Apart from the planets, there are also astrology symbols for the zodiac. Aries - Ram (the horns of a ram) Taurus - Bull (the horns of a bull) Gemini -Twins (Roman numeral two) Cancer - Crab (claws of a cab) Leo - Lion (head and mane of a lion) Virgo - Virgin (the arms of a maiden holding a sheaf of wheat) Libra - Scale (scales) Scorpio - Scorpion (the tail and legs of a scorpion) Sagittarius - Archer (bow and arrow) Capricorn - Goat Aquarius - Waterbearer (waves of water) Pisces - Fish (two fish linked together yet facing opposite directions) Apart from the above there are also many miscellaneous astrology symbols that are used.
