Astrology signs
All leading newspapers and magazines in the world have a column dedicated to astrology signs, commonly known as sun signs. A large population buying these periodicals or dailies will first look to see what the daily prediction for the astrology signs is. What are these astrology signs? Astrology signs are simply the 12 equal divisions of the zodiac. In the western and Indian traditions of astrology these 12 astrology signs correspond with the constellations while in Chinese astrology there is no connection. Also in the western and Indian astrology traditions, there is greater importance given to the path the sun, moon and planets take through each of the astrology signs while in Chinese astrology time is the central feature and the astrology signs are linked with months, days and hours. Despite these differences there is a common feature in all three astrology traditions - in each of them the ‘rising astrology sign’ is important for an individual. This is the sign that is on the eastern horizon (which changes with the earth’s rotation) at the time of an individual’s birth. Another commonality amongst the astrology signs in the three astrology traditions is the subdivisions amongst the 12 astrology signs. In each tradition the 12 astrology signs are divided into 4 groups of three signs. In the Western tradition they are known as Air, Earth, Fire and Water. These are known by their Sanskrit names in the Indian tradition, Vayu, Prithvi, Tejas and Jala. In the Chinese tradition they are not named, and instead are called Trines (one to four). The western and Indian astrology signs correspond with and are named according to the constellations. Each of these astrology signs is associated with one of the four classical elements, with a quality (mutable, fixed or cardinal) and also an area of concern (personal, social or universal). The 12 astrology signs are named the following: Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces. All the astrology signs are representative of one ideal type of personality. However it is important to remember that one person cannot have all the characteristics of one type of personality. There is always a mix and these can be understood by charting out a horoscope or a birth chart. In Indian astrology the 12 astrology signs are not as important as in western tradition. Instead ‘nakshatras’ or lunar mansions which have been used since Vedic times are important. These are based on the moons elliptical path. Indian astrology believes that the position of the moon at the time of birth is very important. Chinese astrology signs are named after the 12 original animals and are further linked to 5 natural elements. Thus one can see that astrology signs are a vast area of study and knowledge and need to be understood in depth before they can be interpreted and applied to ones life and related experiences.
