Mayan astrology
Mayan astrology is one of the lesser known and less frequently used types of astrology in the world today. Mayan astrology is totally different from the more common and popular Vedic astrology and Western astrology. The most obvious difference that one observes is the absence of the use of planetary and star motions and patterns in Mayan astrology. However, researchers and theorists say that a study of the remaining few manuscripts (those that escaped the Spanish Book Burning of the 14th Century) and of inscriptions on monuments reveals that the ancient Mayans did use the positions of the moon and Venus and even eclipses in their calculations. They might even have had knowledge of the other planets also. However detailed information on how these calculations are to be used and interpreted is not available to us any longer, and thus one does not see it in modern Mayan astrology. The foundation of Mayan astrology lies in recognizing that time is cyclical in nature and not linear. Mayan astrology follows its own calendar called the Sacred calendar or the tzolk’in, which has 260 days (20 days which cycle 13 times). Each of the 20 days has a specific name and meaning (lmix’ - Water lily, lk’ - Wind, Ak’b'al - Night, K’an - Corn, Chikchan - The snake, Kimi - Death, Manik - Hand, Lamat - Venus, Muluk - Water, Ok - Dog, Chuwen - The monkey, Eb’ - Tooth/Evil rain, B’en - Green maize, Ix - Jaguar, Men - The eagle, K’ib’ - Soul/Conch Shell/Wax, Kab’an - Earth, Etz’nab’ - Flint, Kawak - Storm, Ajau - Lord). Mayan astrology also follows a 365-day calendar called the Vague Year or Haab’. This year has 18 months of 20 days each and one short month (5 days) called Uayeb which is thought of as an unlucky month in Mayan astrology. Each of the names also has a name and a meaning along with it (Pop -Mat, Wo -Frog, Sip - Stag, Sotz’ - Bat, Sec - Skull, Xul - End, Yaxk’in - Green Sun, Mol - Reunion, Ch’en - Well, Yax - Green, Sak - White, Keh - Deer, Mak - Cover, K’ank’in - Yellow Sun, Muwan - Owl, Pax - Music, K’ayab’ - Turtle, Kumk’u - Dark God + Wayeb’ - Spectres). Both calendars in Mayan astrology work in sync and thus each day will have two names, one of the Sacred calendar and the other of the Vague year. Along with the calendars, Mayan astrology also had a concept called the Long Count Calendar. This calendar has 360-days which together make a ‘tun’. Twenty of these tuns make K’atun (7200 days). Twenty K’atuns are together called b’ak’tun (144,000 days). Thirteen of these b’ak’tun make up a Great Cycle or Sun. Mayan astrology believes that when a Great cycle ends, it results in a huge catastrophe and humankind rebuilds itself. According to Mayan astrology, currently we are in the Fifth Great cycle that began on August 11, 3114 BC and is said to finish on 21st December 2012.
