Astrology
The skies have always held immense fascination for mankind. Looking at the heavenly bodies one wonders what mysteries they hold for those on earth. This study of the stars and planets, their movements and paths and the supposed influence they have on the destinies and future of humans and natural events is what astrology is all about. The very word astrology is derived from the Greek word ‘astron’ which means constellations or stars. Astrology is often thought to be the same as astronomy. This was probably true before the modern era when the skies were searched and studied for purposes of divination and predictive reasons. With time astronomy became a separate science from astrology, purely for studying astronomical objects and phenomena without any link to astrological assumptions etc. Astrology itself goes beyond a science and enters the field of metaphysics. Like other schools of thoughts and beliefs like feng-shui and yoga, astrology too is based on ancient theories of energy and associated patterns and influences. Astrology functions on the assumption that the changing positions of the celestial bodies have a direct impact on human life and experiences on earth. Since astrology is an ancient tradition (existing since 2nd millennium BCE it goes without saying that it is very widespread and each culture will have its own beliefs and concepts. However there are 3 traditions that are largely followed today and which lie at the core of several other traditions. These are the Vedic astrology, Western astrology and Chinese astrology. The Western and Vedic astrology have a common root as they both ‘horoscopic systems’ in which a chart or a horoscope is made depicting the positions of the sun, the moon and the planets. One difference is that Vedic astrology uses sidereal zodiac in which the zodiac is connected to the original constellations, while Western astrology follows tropical zodiac in which the zodiac don’t correspond to the original positions of the constellations in the sky. Today astrology is used by many to gain a better understanding of the self and as an explanation for why things happen. Sun signs/Zodiac signs very often become stereotyped. For example, someone who is a Virgo is thought to be a purist and a neat-freak, Scorpios are thought to be sultry and intense etc. Astrology is very commonly used to explain and understand relationships. These could be romantic ones or even between parent and child, siblings, employees, friends etc. Comparing the birth charts of people also helps in understanding points of conflict and comfort etc. In today’s world astrology is increasingly been looked upon for answering existential questions and for predicting the future to ensure a peaceful and happy existence.
